RECENT VETERANS OUTREACH EVENTS
The Grand Strand Chapter of MOAA sponsors and/or participates in several Outreach events each year to support homeless veterans, veterans in need, distressed veteran families. We are always raising funds and applying for grants to meet the growing needs of veterans and their families across Horry County, Georgetown County and Northeastern South Carolina.
In 2023 Grand Strand Chapter Military Officers Association of America (GS MOAA) successfully held three Veteran Stand Downs serving 314 area Veterans with winter equipment. Each Veteran received the following equipment: backpack, winter thermal underwear, boots, wool watch caps, blankets, thermal fleece jackets, personal grooming items, toothpaste and brushes, food, and food lion food cards. Additionally, GSMOAA volunteers obtained needed veteran services requested from each veteran and these include: dental requests 123, veteran claims assistance 86, veteran medical services 47, veteran legal requests 16, veteran education and training 21, veteran employment assistance 18, veteran housing assistance 23, bus vouchers 26, and food requests 11. Veteran Outreach personnel are preparing lists of each of these to be provided to the VA and other VSOs to assist in getting appointments with the appropriate organizations for these veterans. Since 2019, GSMOAA has assisted and or conducted 19 Veteran Stand Downs, including two centralized and 17 mobile remote Stand Downs throughout NE South Carolina. These Stand Downs have served 1350 veterans with over $250K of government surplus items, $25,000 in other private and commercial
