RECENT VETERANS OUTREACH EVENTS
The Grand Strand Chapter of MOAA sponsors and/or participates in several Outreach events each year to support homeless veterans, veterans in need, distressed veteran families. We are always raising funds and applying for grants to meet the growing needs of veterans and their families across Horry County, Georgetown County and Northeastern South Carolina.
GRAND STRAND MOAA
STAND DOWNS
Grand Strand MOAA (GSMOAA) Chapter successfully conducted their 20th & 21st Veteran Stand Downs in the last 5 years during November 2024. The first was held on 3 November 2024 at the Waccamaw Native American Tribal Ground. GSMOAA members provided 49 Veterans, mostly Waccamaw Tribal Veterans, with backpacks, boots, watch caps, winter underwear, jackets, socks, sleeping bags (Homeless Veterans), and over $1000 in Food Lion Cards. Our second Veteran Stand Down was held in conjunction with Myrtle Beach Veteran Centers at the General Reed Center located at Market Commons. During the Stand Down GSMOAA members provided 107 (including 11 Homeless) Veterans with similar materials and over $2000 in Food Lion Cards. As a result of registering 156 Veterans, we collected 162 Veteran Requests for necessary services including dental, medical, veteran claims, housing assistance, education/training assistance, legal, and others. We are currently providing listings for each category of request to the proper VA or other appropriate VSO for appointments and/or further assistance.
As the GSMOAA Co-Veteran Outreach Director, I want to personally say thanks to our members and their spouses for taking the time to assist in making these Stand Downs and their load-ins successful. Without your assistance, they would not have been successful. Merry Christmas and Happy New year to all our wonderful GSMOAA members.
